ZIMSEC Continuous Assessment Learning Area (CALA) Introduction
The Zimbabwe Examination Council has reintroduced the Continuous assessment Learning Area which was first introduced in 2017 into the examination system of Zimbabwe. This new learning are will constitutes 30% of the total ZIMSEC mark. This program is affecting 2021 a level and o level candidates and in O level there a 5 tasks where's where's in A level there are 4 tasks. This new system will consist of the facilitator(teacher) and the learner. As we all know every system has disadvantages and disadvantages. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of the newly introduced CALA.
ADVANTAGES
1. these projects or tasks put students on an advantage as we only need to work for the remaining 70% in the final exam. The whole educational system in zimbabwe and around the whole globe has been affected by the pandemic and learner could not attend school like the normal days. We still have a lot to cover and we have less time so it will be at an advantage if we enter an examination with an extra 30%.
2. Continuous assessment can provide early indications of the performance of students. An increased sense of inclusiveness: Continuous assessment provides students with a constant stream of opportunities to prove their mastery of material and sends the message that everyone can succeed if given enough time and practice.assessment can provide reliable data on student learning
3. Higher learning standards for all
In a system of continuous assessment, advanced students can progress through material at their own pace and remain engaged by pursuing more challenging work as they master the basics
DISADVANTAGES
The main challenge we face as students in Zimbabwe is lack of facilities in schools especially in rural areas. Continuous assessment require research and this can be done mainly and efficiently on the internet. In some remote places students lack access to the web and some don't even have researching gadgets such as cellphones, computers, laptops e.t.c This become a very big disadvantage as some students are unable to research properly and come out with good results
Another challenge we have is time and this is affecting everyone from all places around the country. student were greatly affected by the pandemic which called for the prolonged closure of schools and now the majority are far from finishing the syllabus. We still have a lot to cover and also have to do those tasks which are time consuming and with all this work we have very little time remaining
Economy is another factor greatly affecting children especially from middle income families. task requires stationary in form of flat files and books . This increase the load on parents who are already struggling with our school fees and registration fees.lastly there is Greater study pressure
Unlike the final exam system, students and teachers need to focus throughout a course as all work counts towards the final grade. This may cause learners to feel more stressed. Under the final exam system, students may "cram", or study for long hours, before the test in order to get a good grade. Thus, they only have to work hard for a shorter period
Finally even with all these challenges we must persevere through these struggles and hope for the best.
